Ken Meter on Building a Local Food Economy

“In my mind, what a food system ought to do and what a strong one would accomplish is to really give us very healthy food that we know the source of.  And it should help us build wealth in our communities.  It should also help us connect with each other, as people who learn what farmers do and learn what consumers need and learn about what eacxh other has to have in order to work well in the system.”

Ken Meter argues that our traditional food system has always been about exports, even before our wealth made it possible to buy nearly all of our food from afar.  But it was during the 1970s that we began to lose our farm communities.
