Today was a great “garden exchange” day. We gave away extra squashes, and got eggplant, basil, peppers, cucumbers, and another squash from our friends.
Sadly, this will likely be our last exchange of the summer season: there’s a frost warning for tonight. The National Weather Service predicts 36 degrees, and our lows are typically 8-10 degrees colder. We spent the evening covering our tomatoes, eggplants, ground cherries, and squashes in the hope that the frost won’t be too severe. I fear the green beans and cucumbers, which weren’t doing so well anyway, will be casualties since we ran out of tarps and old towels and blankets.
It always seems as though our harvest is just getting started when the weather changes. The good news is, we’ve got turnips and cabbages sprouting, so there’ll be a fall harvest, too!
