Busy Days

The process of making and selling cheese never seems to end.  I realized today that it’s been days since we put up a blog post.  So here’s a quick update about what we’ve been doing:
We’re making four batches of cheese this week (Gouda, Cheddar, Romano, and Neufchatel).  We’re also talking to local stores about carrying [...]

Saying Goodbye

Ivy (right) with Willow and Brigette.
We may never know what happened to Ivy.  The vet thinks it might have been a twisted bowel, but says even a postmortem exam would probably be inconclusive.
Our friend Traci brought a Bobcat over today and dug a hole for us.  Then we said goodbye to Ivy.  She rests in [...]

Loss

Willow became an orphan tonight.  Her mom, Ivy, hasn’t been affected by any of the flu-like symptoms going through the herd this spring.  Until a few hours ago, she seemed perfectly healthy.  Then about 12:30 this morning, she began to moan in pain.  She appeared bloated, and we were getting ready to treat her for [...]

Updates

We spent Saturday at the Parowan Car Show as a vendor. Despite the cold, damp, windy, and at times rainy weather, there was a great turnout, and lots of people sampled our cheese. We also got to see come great cars, both classic and antique.
We’ve signed up for a booth a Groovefest, the [...]

Willow

Proving once again that nothing is cuter than a baby goat!

Replacing the Bulk Tank – with some sleight of hand

More evidence of spring

Irises in bloom.

Siberian pea shrubs, one of the few shrubs we’ve had good luck with, also in bloom.

Another hackberry in bloom.  The hackberries are a very hardy tree, the only one we’ve had 100% success with.  Most others, including fruit trees, we’ve had 100% failure.

We’ve got cheese!

Finally, we have cheese for sale.  First up is a semi-hard fresh cow milk cheese seasoned with spices: celery seed, fennel, or caraway.  We had some jalapeno, but it sold very quickly.
By next week, we’ll have some Chevre, a soft, spreadable goat milk cheese.  In another week or two, we’ll have a cow milk Brie [...]

Red Acre Farms CSA to offer a cheese share

Red Acre Farms, a community-supported agriculture vetnure, or CSA, offers shares in its produce, as well as locally-produced eggs and milk.  They’re now adding a cheese share to their offerings.  Share purchasers will get a half pound of Jackrabbit Ranch artisan cheese every week for 18 weeks.
We don’t know in advance what cheeses will be [...]
